A Sri Lankan court ordered to release a Buddhist monk who was in remand custody for nearly a year on charges of possession of explosives and fires arms.

The Colombo High Court today ordered the release of Ven. Uvatenne Sumana Thero on a cash bail of Rs. 100,000 and a split personal bail of Rs.1 million by two sureties each.

The Thero, a resident monk of the Bodhirukkarama Temple in capital Colombo and three others were arrested in January for allegedly possessing explosives to stage an attack against the government during the Presidential polls.

Sri Lanka Police Special Task Force personnel found two T-56 riffles and 54 hand grenades during a raid on the Temple premises in January.

The prosecution has informed the court that the Attorney General had no objection to granting bail.
