Main opposition UNP says Sri Lankan government is on a witch-hunt against its members

Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) today has said that the government is on a witch-hunt against the opposition politicians.

UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake has told the media that the government was accusing the opposition and conducting a witch-hunt trying to cover their problems.

Attanayake has made this comment in response to the government's move to bring a no confidence motion against UNP deputy leader Karu Jayasuriya for his comment on war crimes made to in an interview with a local newspaper.

According to Attanayake, the UNP has never blamed the military for committing any war crimes during the war against the LTTE last year.

The government recently accused the opposition MP Dr. Jayalath Jayawardena of allegedly participating in anti government conspiracies.
