Main opposition party of Sri Lanka to amend its constitution

Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) has scheduled to hold the party convention on December 12.

The party has planned to amend the constitution at this convention, UNP sources say.
A special party committee that comprised party seniors has proposed the amendments. The working committee and the parliamentary group have approved them.

UNP sources say that the party leadership expects the amendments to be passed unanimously.

According to the party reforms, the leader, the deputy leader, the vice leader, chairman and the national organizer of the UNP are to be elected by majority support of the working committee and the parliamentary group.

The election of office bearers under new constitution is to be held within four months after the convention, UNP sources say.
