The Sri Lankan government has released 45 million rupees to assist over 76,000 people affected by the floods brought on due to the incessant rain in the country.
According to Sri Lanka's Disaster Management Centre updates 76,087 people from 23,949 families are affected by floods while 7,435 people from 3,384 families have been temporarily sheltered in 57 welfare centers throughout the country.
So far three deaths have been reported due to drowning. DMC reports that 268 houses have been fully damaged while 2,047 houses have been partially damaged.
The shelters have been established in the districts of Hambantota, Kegalle, Kandy, Gampaha, Jaffna, Kilinochchi and Mannar.
Most number of displaced persons has been reported from the Mannar district.
In Vavuniya, 18 acres of paddy fields have been destroyed due to dam breach of Talikulam Lake and 85 acres have been destroyed due to dam breach of Nochchikulam Lake.
Ratnapura - Deniyaya road has become impassable due to an earth slip.
The Irrigation Department said that reservoirs in ten Mahaweli Zones and 25 tanks are overflowing with the release of water from these reservoirs through the canal-ways.
For the first time in 16 years all eight sluice gates of the Victoria reservoir have been opened. The government has warned the people living downstream to be vigilant of floods.
