MP Amunugama told that the programme is aimed at developing about 5,000-6,000 villages in the Kandy District.
He explained that funds that were earlier allocated to the grama seva divisions through various line ministries have now been centralized and utilized to develop villages in a systematic manner under the coordination of the Nil Balakaya.
"Rather than spending small amounts of money to develop villages at different times, under the new programme monies will be invested in the total development of villages in a systematic manner. Once the project is completed in a respective grama seva division, it would be a fully fledged township," he said. Once these 10 areas are developed, the programme would move on to another set of villages, he added.
MP Amunugama said that simultaneous to the development programme, the Nil Balakaya has also launched a social welfare programme in the villages by holding health camps, awareness, and other educations programmes.
The first such programme was recently held in Haragama in the Kandy District.
