A Sri Lankan court today (18) ordered the Prison Department to provide better facilities to former Army Commander and Democratic National Alliance (DNA) leader Sarath Fonseka.
The Colombo High Court has ordered that Fonseka be provided with the necessary facilities to exercise and also to repair the roof in his cell after his lawyer complained that Fonseka has fallen ill as a result of his leaking prison cell.
The High Court delivered this order when the controversial 'white flag' case was taken up for hearing today.
Fonseka's Counsel Nalin Ladduwahetty informed the court that Fonseka was unable to attend proceedings since he was receiving treatment at the prison hospital for a lung infection.
Ladduwahetty told court that the Prison authorities have failed to provide Fonseka with the necessary facilities although the court had ordered them to do so and he also said the roof in Fonseka's cell leaked during rains and he had to sweep the rainwater out.
The former Army commander who led the Army against Tamil Tiger rebels was sentenced last month to a 30-month jail term in the Welikada high-security prison after he was found guilty by a court martial for alleged irregularities in military procurements during his tenure as Army Chief.
