Sri Lanka's Marxist party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) Monday launched an island wide leaflet distribution campaign against the rising cost of living demanding the government to reduce the burdens shouldered by the people.
The campaign according to JVP MP and Propaganda Secretary Vijitha Herath is the People's Movement against the Tax Burden. The party believes that the high taxes levied on commodities have resulted in the rising cost of living.
The party also called on the government to honor its promise and increase salaries of the working masses.
The campaign was launched this morning at the Manning Market in Pettah with several JVP leaders participating in it. It is to be held at village and district level in the next few days.
The JVP campaign comes before the presentation of the 2011 budget on November 22.
