Sri Lanka's first ever Norochcholai Coal Power Plant began preliminary operations this morning under the auspices of the Power and Energy Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka.
The power plant situated in Norochcholai in the Northwestern Province of Sri Lanka commenced operations today by activating a furnace successfully with diesel as fuel instead of coal.
The plant began transferring 65,000 metric tons of coal brought from Indonesia to the jetty today. It is to commence burning of fuel in the furnace tomorrow under the first stage of the project which is about 95 percent completed.
The plant will add 300 megawatts of power to the national grid when it begins full operations in January 2011.
The second phase is scheduled to be completed by 2013 and is expected to inject 600 megawatts to the national grid.
The construction of the three phases of the US$ 1.35 billion plant is being carried out by a Chinese company.
