Tamukkam Grounds in the heart of the city is decked up for the wedding of the decade — that of Durai Dayanidhi, son of Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilisers M K Alagiri, with Anusha, daughter of High Court advocate P S Seetharam an — to be solemnised on Thursday
.For reasons best known to part y leaders, DMK functionaries have been told not to make a grand show of their Chief Minister M Karunanidhi’s grandson’s wedding. Banners and buntings are therefore restricted to areas around Tamukkam. The wedding venue alone sports a grand entr ance — a miniature Red Fort.
Party cadre are disappointed with the austere celebrations. A DMK fun cti onary, who did not want to be na m ed, attributed the low profile of festivities to upcoming assembly polls and the A Raja-spectrum debacle.
Deputy Chief Minister M K Stalin was among the VVIPs who visited the venue and checked arrangements for his nephew’s wedding. Karunanidhi, himself, is due to arrive on Wednes day afternoon for an evening recept i on. Governor Surjit Singh Barnala will bless the couple on Wednesday. Actors Rajinikant, Kamal Haasan and Suriya will also be present.
Alagiri had personally invited President Pratibha Patil, Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, UPA chairpers on Sonia Gandhi and his cabinet coll eagues. As Parliament is in session, only Union Ministers P Chidambar am, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Vayalar Ravi and G K Vasan are likely to attend.
