Karunanidhi for all-party meeting on Cauvery water dispute

Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Friday mooted the idea of an all-party meeting to discuss the Cauvery water dispute, instead of the ruling party and the Opposition pointing an accusing finger at each other.

“The dispute could be deemed as resolved if the leader of the Opposition is ready for it,” he told the Assembly responding to AIADMK deputy leader O. Panneerselvam's allegations that the government failed to get justice for Tamil Nadu on the Cauvery water dispute.

Mr. Karunanidhi said it would be highly appreciable if Mr. Panneerselvam could get clearance from his leader and AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa.

He felt that debating the issue in the Assembly and on public platforms would work only in favour of the Karnataka government.

“Instead of indulging in a debate over who filed a case in the court and who sought an adjournment, once again all political parties can sit together and decide who is responsible for it,” he said.

“Let ideas be exchanged. Then we decide whether the suggestions could be implemented. The government will fulfil its duty based on the final decision,” he said.

Earlier, Law Minister Durai Murugan said the AIADMK should be held squarely responsible for the present state of the affairs on the Cauvery water dispute, saying the State government was forced to approach the Supreme Court because of the ill advice of the party. “We could have filed a petition before the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal for redressing our grievances,” he said. Mr. Panneerselvam's contention was that the failure on the part of the DMK government to notify the final award of the Tribunal created a disadvantageous position for Tamil Nadu.

Congress whip Peter Alphonse, PMK leader G.K. Mani, CPI leader V. Sivapunniyam and CPI (M) deputy leader Nanmaram supported the proposal.
