Sri Lanka's Western Province education authorities in short of money to pay teacher salaries

Sri Lanka's Western Provincial Council sources say the Provincial Ministry of Education is facing a severe financial crisis.

Accordingly, measures have been taken to suspend all payments of arrears, increments etc. of the teachers of the schools that come under Provincial Ministry of Education.

Sources from several zonal education offices said that the account branches had to change the pay sheets that had already been prepared.

Meanwhile, the Ceylon Teachers' Union said that the move is unfair and urged the government to allocate money to pay the salary arrears of the teachers that have been pending for a long time.

Around 10% of the 36,200 teachers of the Province are to be paid with salary arrears.
