UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake has called on Jayasekara to explain why disciplinary action should not be taken against him over two controversial issues.
Jayasekara was accused of writing to a Sinhala daily newspaper contradicting a report that the party's Working Committee had decided to take action against seven dissident MPs for voting in favour of the 18th Amendment to the Constitution and interrupting Dr. Jayalath Jayawardena, when he was on a live programme on a private television channel, to say that the Working Committee had taken no decision to deal disciplinarily with the seven MPs.
Jayasekara last month announced that he along with about 25 other UNP lawmakers would sit independently in parliament if the party leadership did not implement the proposed party reforms. The decision was later changed after the party leadership agreed to resolve the issues within 10 days and the pro-reforms group arrived at an interim-agreement.
The pro-reforms group headed by parliamentarian Sajith Premadasa has agreed to wait till the party convention in November without lobbying for positions in the party.
Despite the ongoing internal conflict within the party over his leadership, the party leader Ranil Wickremasinghe appears to be unwilling to accept the crisis and bring necessary reforms to win the disenchanted UNP supporters.
