Sri Lanka's only gold medalist at the 19th Commonwealth Games could lose his gold medal after testing positive to performance enhancing drugs.
Boxer Manju Wanniarachchi, 30, has tested positive for the steroid nandrolone, Commonwealth Games organizers have informed Sri Lanka on Saturday.
Sri Lanka's National Olympic Committee (NOC) has temporarily taken over the gold medal, the first gold medal won in boxing in 72 years, the BBC reported.
Wanniarachchi who hails from Kandy beat the Welsh boxer Sean McGoldrick in the bantamweight 56 kg division, to earn the gold at the 19th Commonwealth Games in Delhi earlier this month.
The BBC quoting the NOC chief Hemasiri Fernando said the boxer had admitted taking a medication from a doctor in Kurunegala six months ago. The doctor is being questioned by the police, the official has said.
Wanniarachchi can lose the gold medal if a second urine sample also fails the doping test.
