The group had introduced themselves as members from the defence establishment and had requested for journalist Sanjeewa Padmasri's identification papers.
The threats have allegedly been leveled against Padmasiri after he had shown his media accreditation card issued by the Government Information Department.
According to Padmasiri, the group of persons had approached him in a black jeep bearing number 32 ' 8833 near the Borella Cemetery when he was on his way to his office in Narahenpita on his motorbike.
Padmasiri had been threatened to watch his step or face serious consequences in future.
Following the incident, Padmasiri has lodged a complaint at the Borella Police.
Meanwhile, Editor of the Rathu Lanka newspaper and former JVP MP K.D. Lalkantha condemned the threat on his journalist and said the members of his staff would not bow down to such cowardly acts.
He said the newspaper would continue to be the voice for the working masses and fight to win their demands.
