Sri Lanka Transport Ministry looking at reducing Railway Department expenses

Sri Lanka's Transport Ministry says measures would be taken to reduce the expenditure incurred by the Railways Department.

Deputy Transport Minister Rohana Dissanayake has told the local media that the Railways Department would reduce its expenses to increase its annual revenue.
Dissanayake has said that the Department's total income in 2009 was Rs. 4.019 billion while the expenditure was Rs. 8.780 billion.
However, the Deputy Minister has said the department intended to increase its income to Rs.5 billion by the end of this year.
Currently, the Department spends Rs.5.073 billion each year on workers salaries, allowances and overtime payments while overhead costs had also increased significantly.
