Sri Lanka trade union signs wage hike demand as a proposal for the government's 2011 budget

Sri Lanka's Marxist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) affiliated National Trade Union Center (NTUC) today signed a budget proposal calling for a Rs. 8,000 salary increase for the working masses, to be handed over to the government on Wednesday (06).

The decision to submit the demand for a Rs. 8,000 salary increase for the workers as a proposal to be included in the 2011 budget was decided by the Joint Trade Unions Forum convened by the NTUC.
NTUC Head and JVP politburo member, K.D. Lalkantha said that the NTUC leaders signed the proposal for a salary increase today at the Center's headquarters in Narahenpita, Colombo.
He said the proposal would be sent to the work places for all trade union representatives to sign it before being handed over to the government on the 6th.

The NTUC last week formed a Joint Trade Unions Forum to fight for a Rs. 8,000 salary increase for workers in line with the rising cost of living.
