Sri Lanka to promote green sports to bid for 2018 Commonwealth Games in Hambanthota

Sri Lanka Sports Ministry sources said that the President Mahinda Rajapaksa has instructed the officials to take the 2018 Commonwealth Games as an opportunity to boost the image of the country.

Sri Lanka has formed an organizing committee for the 2018 Commonwealth Games and the President has directed the officials to thrust the country forward among the countries that vie for hosting the prestigious sports event.

The President has directed the officials to highlight green concept to promote Sri Lanka as the most suitable contender for the event.

Gold Coast, Queensland of Australia, and Hambanthota of Sri Lanka are the confirmed bids for the Commonwealth Games 2018.

The deadline for submission of s formal bid to the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) is May 11, 2011. The winning bid will be announced in Basseterre, St Kitts on November 11, 2011.
