The English daily, 'The Island' quoting Sri Lanka's Defence Secretary and President's brother Gotabhaya Rajapaksa said that the President was ready for a re-evaluation of the recommendation of the Second Court Martial If General Fonseka appeals to the President directly.
Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa Thursday approved the prison sentence given by the second court martial against former Army Commander after finding him guilty of four charges related to alleged irregularities in military procurements during his tenure as Army Chief.
Fonseka who was held in the Naval Headquarters during the tribunals began his 30-month sentence yesterday in the Welikada Prison.
Defence Secretary Rajapaksa has told The Island said that Fonseka's conviction wasn't a political issue and it couldn't be resolved by protests or intervention by third parties.
Meanwhile Cabinet Spokesperson and Media Minister Keheliya Rambukwella told the media that according to the Constitution, Fonseka, who is the leader of the Democratic National Alliance (DNA), would be deprived of his seat with immediate effect.
However, the DNA says they will appeal to a civilian court against the court martial decision.
