Sri Lanka Police orders to surrender all unlicensed fire arms in the Eastern Province

The Sri Lanka Police has issued a directive to surrender all unlicensed weapons in use in the Eastern Province to the police.

Accordingly, all unlicensed fire arms in operation in the East are to be handed over to the nearest police station before October 30, 2010.
The local media Saturday quoted Senior DIG in charge of the Eastern Province, Edison Gunathilaka as saying that every police station in the Eastern Province has been notified of the directive.

The DIG has said that legal action would be instituted after October 30 against any person who possesses an unlicensed fire arm.

The police have reportedly decided on this move following information regarding large numbers of unlicensed firearms are in operation in the Province.
