A clash between IUSF members and the police officers left at least 29 persons, including 19 policemen and 9 students, injured. Injured have been admitted to the Colombo national Hospital.
The clash occurred when the police tried to move away the IUSF members who stormed into the Higher Education Ministry premises yesterday (14).
The IUSF members demanded the authorities to take action to release the university students of Peradeniya who are currently under police custody.
The students were arrested by the police for allegedly hooting at Higher Education Minister S.B. Dissanayake when he visited the university recently.
Police Spokesperson SP Prishantha Jayakody said 21 university students were taken into police custody for questioning.
IUSF Convener Udul Premaratne has said the government is continuing the process of destroying free education.
"Students' rights have been heavily violated under the present administration. We will continue our struggle to protect free education and students' rights," he has told the media.
