Sri Lanka nurses union launches token strike

Sri Lanka's Marxist party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) affiliated All Ceylon Nurses Union (ACNU) today launched an island wide token strike among the nursing staff in state hospitals.

The token strike was organized in protest of the government's failure to address 11 demands presented by the nursing sector.
The head of the ACNU S.B. Mediwatte said the sick note campaign was launched at 7:00 a.m. today and will continue till 7:00.a.m. tomorrow.

Mediwatte has told the local media that the protest campaign was not aimed at inconveniencing the patients, but to send a message to the government, which had not honored its promise though it had agreed to meet the demands at talks held with the unions more than one and a half months ago.
The nurses' union demands rectification of salary anomalies, promotion to Grade I after twelve years of service, formulation of a policy of promotions and transfers and the reintroduction of the four-year nursing degree course.
