Sri Lanka Ministry of Health to implement a nursing constitution

The Minister of Health Maithripala Sirisena said today that his Ministry had decided to prepare and implement a nursing constitution to provide solutions for the problems of the nurses.

The Minister's statement came as Marxist People's Liberation Front (JVP) affiliated trade union launched a token strike despite failing to disrupt normalcy in many of the hospitals island wide. Other major trade unions of the nurses did not support the JVP union's action.

Minister Maithripala Sirisena said to media that he held discussions with nursing trade unions during the past few days. He said the trade unions requested the implementation of the nursing constitution with immediate effect.

The Ministry announced that the demands of the nurses would be met during next month after discussions with the Secretary of the Ministry of Finance and other relevant officials.
