Sri Lanka Army to establish new division to defend Southern Province

Sri Lanka Army has planned to establish a new division to defend the economically booming Hambanthota district where an international harbor and an international airport are being constructed.

Addressing media today at a ceremony in Anuradhapura to mark the Army's 61st Anniversary and the upcoming Army Day on October 10, the Army Commander Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya said that the new division would be named as 12 Division.

The Southern Command will be set up with the new 12 Division and 11 and 14 Divisions positioned in Galle and Matara districts respectively.
