Recommencement of the Rubella vaccination programme in Sri Lanka delayed

Recommencement of the Rubella vaccination programme by the Epidemiology Unit of the Health Ministry, which was to commence on October 1, has been delayed.

Health Ministry sources have been quoted in the local media saying that while all the vaccines needed for the programme had already been distributed to the relevant locations island wide, the required advice and guidelines have not yet been sent.

The Rubella vaccination programme was suspended from the National Immunization Programme following deaths of two school girls in Matara and Wariyapola due to complications from the vaccination.
However, health authorities have said that due to the suspension of the Rubella vaccination programme, there was a strong possibility of having more Rubella patients giving birth to children with disabilities.
