Convener of the Movement, DNA parliamentarian Vijitha Herath said the People's Movement for Democracy was formed for all progressive forces calling for Fonseka's release and to protect democracy in the country to come under one umbrella regardless of political affiliations.
"It is a common center and we call on all political parties, trade unions, civil societies and even the general public to join for a common cause. We will fight for Fonseka's release and stand against any anti-democratic move in the country," he said.
Herath said the first step of the Movement is to launch an island wide protest campaign.
"Protests have been organized today in Ambalangoda and Kurunegala. They will be held tomorrow in Kalutara and Ratnapura," he said. A protest at Hambantota Sunday morning was dispersed by police, he added.
The next step is to launch a campaign to collect signatures for a petition.
"The signing of the petition will take place on Tuesday (05) opposite the Fort Railway station at 10 a.m. We call on the general public to come forward to express their sentiments against the anti-democratic acts that are taking place in the country," Herath said.
Politicians, lawyers, monks, and artists participated in the inaugural press conference held today. JVP politburo member and trade union leader K.D. Lalkantha, jailed DNA leader's wife Anoma Fonseka, Chandraguptha Tenuwara, Chrishmal Warnasuriya, Karunaratne Herath, and Ven. Dambara Amila Thero also participated.
