Colombo District Court today issued injunctions against suspending the parliamentary membership of opposition United National Party MPs Manusha Nanayakkara and Upeksha Swarnamalee.
Colombo district judge Ranjith Wathupola issued an injunction to the United National Party (UNP) working committee and the party leader.
Nanayakkara was elected from Galle district and Swarnamalee was elected from Gampaha district as UNP MPs. However, they crossed over to the government in support of the 18th Amendment to the Constitution.
The MPs cited in their petitions that the UNP obtained their resignation letters prior to their nominations were filed for the general election. Therefore, they asked the courts to prevent the party from sacking them.
