Five female students of Sri Lanka's Rajarata University assaulted by a group of students

Clashes among students in Sri Lankan universities continue with the latest being reported from the Rajarata University in the Anuradhapura District of North Central Province.

Rajarata University Registrar A.G. Karunaratne has told the local media that five female students attached to the Management Faculty have been assaulted by another group of students Monday evening within the university premises.

The female students have been sitting for their exams when they were assaulted.

Karunaratne has said the attackers had also caused damages to the property and the exam hall.

The Mihintale police have also confirmed the attack in the Rajarata University and have said that a complaint had been lodged by five female students.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday met with the Vice Chancellors of all the universities to discuss the current chaotic situation in the universities and the necessary steps to be taken to prevent student clashes and restore normal functions.

Currently several faculties in Peradeniya University, Ruhuna University and Kelaniya University have been closed for students while a clash between administrators and monk students of Jayewardenepura University was reported yesterday.

The government blames the Marxist party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) affiliated student unions for creating turmoil in the universities and disrupting education for other students.
