Immigration and Refugee Board spokeswoman Melissa Anderson told The Province on Thursday that brings to 12 the number of Tamils applying for refugee status who have been ordered released.
Federal Public Safety Minister Vic Toews has asked the Federal Court to review all but one of the first nine ordered released by the IRB.
“In four of those cases, the Federal Court dismissed the minister’s application to stay the release,” said Anderson.
“Five of the 12 are actually out [of detention].”
Anderson explained the IRB only orders a release, but it is up to another federal agency to actually execute the order.
A number of the prospective refugees have court dates scheduled for Oct. 21.
Of the 492, Tamils who left their homes in Sri Lanka and arrived on the Sun Sea, 443 were detained — mainly because Canadian authorities could not authenticate their identities. Some 443 adults were originally detained.
