Sri Lanka's Marxist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) says that it would work to bring together all progressive forces that are supportive of democracy to fight against the government's decision to continue with the second stage of constitutional amendments.
A JVP politburo member told that soon after passing the 18th Amendment, the government is now looking at bringing about more amendments to the Constitution.
SLFP General Secretary and Minister Maithripala Sirisena was quoted in the media saying the government was planning to amend the 13th Amendment and introduce electoral reforms in the second stage of the constitutional amendments.
"The people of the country are governed by the Constitution and it is not a mere book that can be changed to suit the whims of a few people," he said.
According to the JVP member, the government was clearly treading an anti-democratic path and all progressive forces have to rally against it.
