Sri Lanka Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe today publicly denounced the charges brought by the government against former Army Commander and current parliamentarian retired General Sarath Fonseka and tore off a mock charge sheet.
He said that Fonseka was put in jail on the basis that he had not revealed his son-in-law's connection with Hicorp Company that was in the business of military supplies.
He said the best could be done to the charge sheet was tearing it and tore a mock charge sheet publicly.
The Opposition Leader performed this act of protest at the felicitation ceremony for veteran United National Party politician Amara Piyaseeli Ratnayake who is retiring from politics.
Wickremasinghe pointed out the contradiction in granting amnesty to the murderers while putting Sarath Fonseka in jail. He questioned what action was taken against the persons who tied public servants to trees and who assaulted tax officers.
