A seven-year-old boy was fatally shot during a crossfire when he was locked among two parties that reportedly exchanged fire at a fuel station in Beruwela town, about 50 kilometers south of Colombo today.
The victim was in a trishaw that came to re-fuel at the station. He was shot when police fired at a group of criminals that were wanted in connection with illegal transportation of cattle, police say.
Police say the criminals fired at them and fled as they attempted to arrest them. The injured boy succumbed to injuries after he was admitted to the Kalutara General Hospital.
Beruwela police are investigating the incident.
