Representatives from six donor agencies are to visit the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka this week to assess the post-conflict situation in the region, Office of the United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Sri Lanka said.
During the three-day visit facilitated by the United Nations, the representatives from the donor agencies will visit communities in Trincomalee and Batticaloa districts and hold meetings with government representative in the districts.
The visit is a part of the UN's continuing attention to post-conflict challenges facing the country, a statement released by the UN office said.
The representatives are to visit the areas where people who fled their homes during the conflict are being resettled with assistance from the government, the United Nations agencies, and non-governmental organizations.
The visit will allow representatives of the donor community to have a first-hand look at the impact that their support has had on the lives of communities, and to explore ways in which the international community could contribute to the recovery process through a combination of assistance ranging from support to livelihoods and housing to strengthening the capacity of local government administration to coordinate and manage the recovery effort as well as initiatives to promote community harmony, the statement noted.
