Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi urges Centre to reconsider decision to conduct common entrance examinations for admissions to medical courses

(UNI) Terming as unacceptable and infringing on the rights of the State, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad to reconsider the Centre’s decision to conduct common entrance examinations for admissions to medical courses from the academic year 2011-12.

In a letter to the Prime Minister and Mr Azad, he said based on the recommendations of the Medical Council of India, the Centre had recently told the Supreme Court that it would hold common entrance examinations for medical admissions in the country.

Since it could not be implemented in States like Tamil Nadu which had abolished entrance tests for engineering and medical courses for the benefit of poor students, Mr Karunanidhi said it was unacceptable and the State was taking steps to implead itself in the case pending before the Supreme Court.
