Several suspects involved in the recent attack on the Deputy Tax Commissioner of the Inland Revenue Department in Matara have surrendered to courts.
Police Spokesperson SP Prishantha Jayakody told the media that four suspects wanted for allegedly assaulting the Deputy Tax Commissioner, H.M. Denzel, on August 10 had surrendered to the Matara court.
Matara Chief Magistrate has remanded the four suspects till September 6.
Trade unions attached to the Inland Revenue Department (IRD) claimed that a close associate of a provincial politician is also wanted by the police for the attack.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa last week ordered the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to immediately arrest the suspects involved in the attack and to provide security to tax officers engaged in the field.
The CID under the supervision of the IGP is conducting further investigations.
The government last week called on IRD officials to return to normal work as steps would be taken against the attackers.
