Sri Lanka's main opposition UNP to assist JVP's anti-government alliance

Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) today said that it is ready to assist an alliance against the government.

UNP spokesperson and parliamentarian Gayantha Karunatileka told the media that the party is ready to assist such an alliance as proposed by the Marxist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP).
According to Karunatileka, the leadership of the alliance was not an important fact as long as it opposed what he called the wrong decisions of the government.

JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva yesterday told a press briefing that the party had already initiated a dialogue with democratic forces locally and internationally to form a broad alliance to fight "the anti-democratic and authoritarian trend of the government."
The UNP teamed up with the Marxist JVP at the last presidential elections to field a common opposition candidate retired General Sarath against President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
