Sri Lanka's Power and Energy Ministry initiative to crackdown on electricity consumers involved illegally tapping electricity has proven successful with hundreds of arrests being made from all parts of the island.
During one such raid, the special investigations unit of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has arrested 371 people for illegally tapping power in the vicinity of Vavuniya in the Northern Province.
The arrests were made by the unit during raids carried out yesterday and today (24).
The arrested individuals have reportedly been handed over to the Vavuniya Police along with the equipment used by the suspects to tap in to the power grid.
The local media has quoted Inspector of Police, Prasad Sriwardena of the Vavuniya Police saying that steps would be taken to produce the individuals before court.
