Sri Lankan court grants bail to Hicorp suspect's mother

Sri Lanka's Colombo High Court today granted bail to Asoka Tilakaratne, the mother of the prime suspect in Hicorp's fraud case, former Army Commander General (Retired) Sarath Fonseka's son-in-law, Danuna Tilakaratne.


Asoka Tilakaratne was granted a Rs.1 million cash bail and Rs 10 million surety bail by High Court judge Deepali Wijesundara.
She was formally charged for holding undeclared currency in a bank deposit box. A total of US$ 520,000, SL Rs 15 million and 100 sterling pounds were recovered from the vault.
The Court ordered Asoka not to leave the country and also ordered the bank not to release the currency until a court order is given.
According to the Criminal Investigation Department the money had been transported from General Fonseka's office at Rajakeeya Mawatha, Colombo 7 to the private bank for safe-keeping.
The Court ordered the CID to obtain suspect's fingerprints and a report on previous offenses.
