Sri Lanka trade unions threaten action against attack on Deputy Commissioner of Inland Revenue Department

Trade unions affiliated to Sri Lanka's Inland Revenue Department have threatened to resort to union action if the government failed to take action against the culprits responsible for the attack on the Deputy Commissioner of the Inland Revenue Department's Provincial Office in Matara.

H.M. Denzil, the head of the Department's Provincial Office in Matara is currently receiving treatment at the Matara Hospital after being attacked by a group of n unidentified group of men Wednesday (11) evening.
Secretary of the Inland Revenue General Employees Union, Ajith Galhena called on the government to establish law and order in the country and to take action against the Deputy Commissioner's attackers.
Galhena told  that Denzil was attacked by a group of men while he was returning home in a bus last evening.
Although the attackers have not been identified, Galhena said it is suspected that the group of thugs may have attacked Denzil due to the strict procedures followed by him in order to collect taxes due to the state.
Galhena observed that the attack on Denzil is a result of sacked minister Mervyn Silva's actions last week, where he tied a Samurdhi officer to a tree for failing to attend a dengue prevention programme.
"Mervyn's actions have now prompted people to take the law into their own hands and the jungle law prevails. This attack is due to that," he said.
