Sri Lanka police today recorded a statement from Sri Lanka's opposition United National Party Hambantota District parliamentarian Sajith Premadasa over the recent suicide of a party activist.
The Mirihana police questioned Premadasa for nearly two hours over the death of 60-year-old Rienzi Algama, who set himself ablaze opposite the party headquarters, Sirikotha, on July 26. He succumbed to his injuries a day later.
The UNP activist prior to his immolation attempt had said that he was disgusted with party disunity.
Reportedly Algama has spoken to a UNP member before his suicide attempt and police were inquiring whether Premadasa was the party member Algama spoke to prior to his death.
MP Premadasa, who is the son of a former President Ranasinghe Premadasa has denied any knowledge of the activist's plans or talking to him.
