The judiciary of Sri Lanka today refused a bail motion of United National Party (UNP) parliamentarian Palitha Thevarapperuma and remanded him until September 01.
The MP was accused of using a mobile phone in the Kalutara prison without permission. Telephone facilities are normally denied to the remand prisoners.
Kalutara Additional Magistrate Namal Perera said that the open courts cannot investigate incidents that took place in prison premises. A court established in the prison should investigate it.
Thevarapperuma who represents Kalutara district is in remand since December 2009 for possession of illegal firearms and assaulting a secretary of a government minister during the Presidential election campaign.
He contested the general election in April while being in custody and became the first in the preferential vote list of the UNP in Kalutara district.
The MP was granted bail on Monday for the case pertaining to possession of illegal firearms. The Appeal Court granted him a personal bail of Rs. 25,000.
Several weeks ago, Thevarapperuma staged a protest demonstration near the parliament premises accusing the prison officials of harassing him.
