President appoints special commission to probe Sri Lanka university student's death

Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa today appointed a one-member special Presidential Commission to inquire into the death of Ruhuna University student Susantha Bandara late last month.

The President's Media Unit said that Retired Supreme Court Judge Jagath Balapatabendi has been appointed for the task by the President.
The Commission is to inquire into allegations leveled against those allegedly responsible for Bandara's death.
The university students' union has accused the police for being responsible for Bandara's death. The Inter University Students Federation (IUSF) has said that Bandara died due to complications arose from head injuries he received during an assault by the Matara Police.
The police, however says another student affiliated with the Marxist party had assaulted the student and the suspect is hiding.
