Major earthquake of magnitude 7.9 west of Guam

A major 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit 216 miles (348 km) west southwest of the US Pacific island territory of Guam, the US Geological Survey said on Friday.


The quake occurred Saturday morning at 7:19 local time (2119 GMT) in the Pacific Ocean at a depth of 12.4 miles (20 km).
The US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no destructive tsunami threat, however earthquakes of this size can be destructive along coasts near the epicenter.
A quake of this magnitude is capable of widespread, heavy damage, but there were no immediate reports of destruction or injuries.
It had initially been reported as a 7.1 magnitude quake.
