A senior official of India's Ministry of External Affairs will visit Sri Lanka in a week to assess the progress of the resettlement and rehabilitation process of Tamils in Sri Lanka's Northern and Eastern Province, an Indian Minister said.
Addressing the media after a meeting with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Sunday, Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram said he had apprised the Chief Minister on the steps taken by the central government for the welfare of Sri Lanka's displaced Tamils.
The visiting official would assess the progress of the resettlement of the Tamils in the North and their rehabilitation as well as the progress on various development projects sponsored by the Indian government including renovation of the Palali Airport and the Kankasanthurai Port to evaluate future needs, Chidambaram said.
Discussing the attack on Indian fishermen by the Sri Lanka Navy, the Minister said the central government has discussed the issue with the Sri Lankan government and it has given assurance that it would not happen again in the future.
Earlier, India's Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in a letter informed the Chief Minister of the measure to send an official of Ministry of External Affairs to Sri Lanka in response to a request made by the Chief Minister urging the central government to do more to restore the lives of the displaced Tamil people in the Northern and Eastern provinces of Sri Lanka.
