Newly married couples of rehabilitated former LTTE combatants received gifts from India in a ceremony held at the Pompemadu rehabilitation center in Vavuniya.
The of India, Vikram Misri handed gift sets of kitchen utensils to 62 newly married couples who were formerly LTTE combatants, a press release of Inidan High Commission in Colombo said.
Speaking on the occasion, the acting High Commissioner said that it was a time for all communities to work towards peace, development, and prosperity in the interests of the nation as a whole.
The former LTTE cadres have been given vocational training to prepare them to find employment and to start a new life.
The Minister of Agriculture Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena and the wife of the Speaker, Chamal Rajapaksa, were also present at the ceremony where the couples also received gardening implements and seedlings.
The press release said the gift of the kitchen utensils was made possible through a grant by the India-Sri Lanka Foundation, and inter-governmental initiative of the Governments of India and Sri Lanka.
