The federal government says it will match all private donations dollar for dollar made to help those devastated by the floods in Pakistan. Locally, one group says it should have taken action when the natural disaster first hit.
According to Salim Karim with the Pakistan Canada Association, "their efforts are too little, too late." He adds the government and most of the international community don't understand that a third-world nation like Pakistan doesn't have resources to handle the impact of the floods. "Eighty per cent of Pakistani people lost their home, lost their belongings, people are already living below the poverty line and right now they're going through hell."
He says the government's previously pledged $33 million was not enough and explains a country as rich as Canada has the means to offer more.
Donations made between August 2nd and September 12th are eligible for the dollar matching.
Flooding in Pakistan has impacted roughly 20 million people and the United Nations has asked the international community for an initial contribution of $460 million.
