Central Bank of Sri Lanka is celebrating 60 years of its service to the Sri Lankan public this year. A special ceremony to mark the sixtieth birthday will take place at the auditorium of the Central Bank Education Center at Rajagiriya, Colombo today. Minister of Economic Development Basil Rajapaksa is the chief guest of the ceremony to be held at 4 p.m.
"The Diamond Jubilee year marks a momentous milestone in the history of the Central Bank in terms of achieving its focused objectives while contributing to the prosperity of the country," a statement issued by the Bank said.
The Central Bank, established on August 28, 1950 under the 1948 No: 58 Act of Financial Law started with five departments. It has expanded to 27 departments now and has four regional offices in Matara, Anuradhapura, Matale, and Jaffna.
The Bank issued a Commemorative Stamp and a First Day Cover today to mark the event. The Governor of the Central Bank Ajith Nivard Cabraal presented the Stamp and the First Day Cover to the Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the Temple Trees. Ministers Jeewan Kumaranatunga, Chandrasiri Gajadeera, and Athauda Senevirathne were also present at the event.

Sports events, educational quiz and cultural programmes and various regional commemorative events are also planned to mark the Diamond Jubilee event.
Among the events planned, Secretary of Finance and Planning Ministry, Dr. P.B. Jayasundara will deliver an oration at the Centre for Banking Studies, Rajagiriya.
An all night Pirith Ceremony will be followed by an almsgiving to the Maha Sanga on Saturday. Hindu, Christian, and Islam Religious events are also to take place.
A Diamond Jubilee Inter-Bank six-a- side cricket tournament will also be held at Mercantile Cricket Association Grounds, Colombo 7, on 28 and 29 August 2010, the Central Bank announced Friday.
