Tamil language courses for Sri Lankan police officers

Sri Lanka Police have launched a program to teach Tamil language to its police force in an effort to better communicate with the Tamils when making inquiries.

Addressing a media conference at the Police Headquarters the Inspector General of Police Mahinda Balasuriya said the program will continue for 5 years with two teaching courses per year. Each training program will take about 5 months to complete.

Around 6,000 police officers are to be trained under the program. Already about 600 police officers are being trained in the police stations of Kalutara, Anuradhapura, and Batticaloa, Balasuriya revealed. The program will commence in the Central Province, he said.

Lack of knowledge in Tamil language of the majority Sinhala police force has become a major impediment for government's reconciliation efforts.

Tamil language has changed and periodically growing. Tamil language became an official language in Indian territory countries, Sri lanka also included in that. In tamil language its an easy process for teach tamil letters and learn tamil alphabets. For police its very comfortable to communicate and inquire the people.
