Sri Lanka produced 166.9 million kilos of tea in the first six months of this year. This is an increase by 27.8 percent compared to the first six months of 2009, according to Sri Lanka Tea Board statistics.
The Director General of Sri Lanka Tea Board H.D. Hemarathna said that Sri Lanka is recovering from the decline of tea exports now.
In the month of June this year tea production reached 29.5 million kilos compared to 24.9 million kilos a year ago.
Favorable weather patterns, timely use of fertilizer, economic peace in estates etc. have contributed to this increase.
The demand for Sri Lanka tea declined in world market during the past period due to a number of reasons including low quality blending by the unscrupulous businessman.
However, the demand for tea from Russia and Middle East nations has increased in the recent times.
