Sri Lankan Defence Ministry detains a man for sending false text messages

The Sri Lankan Defence Ministry had today issued a detention order to place in custody a manager of a mercantile firm for allegedly initiating a false SMS message claiming suicide bombers were to attack Anuradhapura on Poson Poya day.

The manager, according to the police has asked one of his friends to send the message to his wife, who was planning to visit Anuradhapura on a pilgrimage, in order to discourage her from taking the trip.

The friend had sent the message to several others and one recipient had informed the 119 emergency services about it.

Investigations are currently being carried out to ascertain if either of the men had links with the LTTE.
