Sri Lankan Court rejects General Fonseka's request for a telephone call to his daughter in the US

A Sri Lankan court today (12) rejected former Army Commander and Democratic National Alliance (DNA) parliamentarian retired General Sarath Fonseka to permit him to make a telephone call to his daughter in the United States.

The Colombo Fort Magistrate rejected the request saying it is not a facility provided to a suspect in remand, when General Fonseka's lawyers made the request on humanitarian grounds.
The lawyer also requested that General Fonseka, who is in military custody, be allowed to go outside his cell for walks due to health requirements.
The Magistrate placed the matter before prison officials and asked them to consider the request based on prison regulations.
The State Counsel however told Court that an indictment will be filed in the High Court against General Fonseka in the HiCorp arms deal.
Court ordered that General Fonseka be further remanded till July 26.
